Case Study - Chukchansi Economic Development Authority
Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians
ASTONE designed and implemented a powerful, comprehensive grassroots awareness and opposition campaign centered on the goal of compelling the community to attend and voice their concerns at a Bureau of Indian Affairs Public Hearing. The hearing focused on a proposed off-reservation casino project to be located on Highway 99, the major north/south arterial of California.
The components of ASTONE’s campaign included the development of messaging that centered on the idea that the proposed casino, if approved, would set a dangerous California precedent for off-reservation casinos. Tactics utilized included:
- Door-to-door campaign
- Mailer
- Website (www.nohighway99casino.org)
- Television ads
- Radio spots
- Communication with anti-gaming and faith-based groups
- Opinion pieces
- Blog comments
- Full-page newspaper ads
- Coordinated outreach efforts to elected officials.
The campaign was completed with successful results in a tight timeframe- spanning a mere 45 days from time of contact to total implementation.
